Tate gallery
In 1897, was opened Tate gallery, which is considered one of the largest collections of English art of the little ice age (16-20th centuries).
The gallery has received its name in honor of its Creator - sir Henry Tate. Being British sugar king, he supported a number of talented artists. A huge number of works of painters Henry bought for myself. Soon his collection took pride of place in the gallery of British art, which has over sixty thousandsplendid works.
Over sixty thousand works of art: paintings, sculpture, drawings, prints are stored in the national Museum ofLondon, the Tate gallery.

Having existed for a century, the gallery has gained such a number of art that had its divided into two galleries - so in 2000 a branch of the Tate to Tate Modern, where went all the works of contemporary art. Classic English painting remained in an old building, but the exhibitionwas named Tate Britain.
In may 2000, in a converted former Bankside power station Power Station on the South Bank of the Thames, opposite the Cathedral of St. Paul, opened a contemporary art gallery Tate Modern (architects Herzog & de Meuron). After that, the «parent» gallery wasremained into the Tate Britain.
