There is no place like OMSK

There are a lot of wonderful places in our country and the most beautiful is our native city Omsk.

Omsk is the administrative centre of Omsk region. It is situated in West Siberia on the banks of the river Irtysh.

The history of Omsk began about 300 years ago. The foundation of it is connected with the name of Buhholz who erected a fortress for cossack detachment in the mouth of the river Om in 1716.

During the Civil War (April 1918-November 1919) Omsk was the seat of the Supreme ruler of Russia Admiral Kolchak.

Many historical monuments and places of interest attract the attention of our guests. Most of them are situated in the centre of the city.

The visitors admire the statues of Lyuba, the wife of the governor-general and Stepanych, which are in the heart of Omsk, Lyubinskii Prospekt.

Omsk is also called the theatrical capital of Siberia, more than 10 theatres open their doors for audience. The oldest and the most beautiful is Drama Theatre.

Children are fond of visiting Puppet theatre “Arlekin”, grown-ups often go to Musical Theatre.

The inhabitants and guests of our city like to visit museums. There are a lot of them, for example, the Dostoevsky Museum. F. M. Dostoevsky was in prison in Omsk and his literary talent developed here.

Many churches have appeared in Omsk lately. The most beautiful is Uspenskiy Cathedral.

You can also get a good education in Omsk. There are ten higher educational establishments and a lot of colleges in our city.

In their free time people go to cinemas, cafes and restaurants, skating-rinks and other places where they can have fun.

Omsk is also a sport centre. Since 1990 the Siberian International Marathon takes place in August. It is the 3d largest in Russia.

Omsk can also boast of many people who brought fame to Russian science, culture and sport. The names of M. Vrubel, M. Uljyanov, L. Polishchuk, I. Chashchina are known not only in the region, but in many countries in the world.

We live in Omsk and it’s our home town. We are proud of our city. It has many parts but we like its central part most of all because there are splendid buildings, green parks, big shops. Every year Omsk is becoming more and more beautiful.
