Не was born on January 27, 1832 in the village of Dursbury, Cheshire county in the family of the prist. There were 7 girls and 4 boys in the family.
He began to study at home, showed himself as clever and intelligent boy. He was left-handed, according to unconfirmed reports, he was forbidden to write with his left hand. It brought him suffering.
At twelve he entered a small private school near Richmond. He liked it.
But in 1845 he had to go to school Rugby (English)where he didn`t enjoy studying.
In early 1851 he moved to Oxford, where he entered Christ Church, one of the most aristocratic colleges at Oxford University
He did not study well, but thanks to the outstanding mathematical abilities after receiving a bachelor's degree won the competition for reading mathematical lectures in Christ Church. He was giving these lectures for 26 years, they made a good income, even though he was boring of it.
