SPOTLIGHT ON THE USA The USA is one of the most powerful and advanced countries. There are fifty states and over 253 million people live in them. The total area of the USA is over nine million sq. km. The capital is Washington, D.C. The country‘ motto is ”In God We Trust “.
The American flag is called the “ Stars and Stripes” . It has 13 stripes, seven red and six white, and fifty five-pointed white stars on a blue field in the upper left-hand corner. One star is for each state of the USA, the stripes represents the original 13 states. The flag is also called the “ Star-Spangled Banner”, the name of the national anthem of the USA. Americans enjoy their flag. They use the stars and stripes as a popular design anywhere and everywhere, including clothes, shoes, hats.
One can see the bald eagle on the American coat of arms. In its talons are the arrows of war and an olive branch of peace. For the American people it is a bird of strength and courage.
The Statue of Liberty stands on a small island at the entrance to New York. It was presented to the people of the USA by the people of France on July 4, 1884. The Statue of Liberty is the largest statue ever made. It welcomes millions of visitors to the United States. It is a symbol of freedom to millions around the world.
WASHINGTON D. C. Washington is wonderful for tourists, because there are so many famous and historical places to see. The best known building is the White House, home of American Presidents since 1800. The Capitol is the seat of Congress. It is interesting to know that George Washington himself laid the corner-stone of the building. The 535 members of Congress meet here to discuss the nation‘s business. It is easy to get lost in this huge building, full of painting and statues.

NEW YORK Everyone knows something about New York – the Statue of Liberty, the skyscrapers, the beautiful shops on Fifth Avenue, and the many theatres on Broadway. It interesting to know that the land was bought from the local Indians by the Dutch for 24 dollars. Now this is American‘s cultural capital, and its biggest city, with the population of 8 million. There 5 districts in New York: Brooklyn, the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Richmond. Only one of them, the Bronx, is not on an island.

THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING The Empire State Building is one of the tallest buildings ever build by man. It has 102 floors and is 448 metres high. There are 2 observation platforms: one – on the 86th and the other on the 102nd floor.

FESTIVALS In the USA , different states celebrates different holidays, but everyone remembers July 4th, “Independence Day”. The second big American festival is Thanksgiving Day. Children always have fun at Halloween on October 31st. February 14th is St . Valentine‘s Day. Americans celebrate Christmas on December 25. The second Sunday in May is “Mother‘s Day”. People buy cards, flowers and chocolates for their mothers.
SPORT IN THE USA Baseball is the most popular summer sport in America. Americans play tennis, hockey and most other international sports, but they do not play football in the same way as the rest of the world. Basketball is another popular game in America. Americans love winter sports very much.
